Experience Substitutions for CISA Certification

For the CISA certification, you can substitute up to three years of the five-year work experience requirement with the following options:

  • Up to 1 year of information systems experience OR 1 year of non-IS auditing experience can replace 1 year of required experience.

  • 60 to 120 university semester credit hours (equivalent to a 2-year or 4-year degree) can replace 1 or 2 years of experience, respectively, regardless of when they were earned.

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree from a university with an ISACA-sponsored Model Curricula can substitute for 1 year of experience. This cannot be combined with other substitutions to exceed 3 years.

  • A master’s degree in information security or information technology from an accredited university can substitute for 1 year of experience.

Experience Exception for CISA Certification

If you are a full-time university instructor in a related field (such as computer science, accounting, or information systems auditing), you can substitute 2 years of your teaching experience for 1 year of the required professional experience for the CISA certification.
